Arthur C. Clarke, who died on March 19 at age 90, was one of the most popular science fiction writers of the 20th century. He is best known for his novel 2001: A Space Odyssey(1968). Its film version was directed by Stanley Kubrick.

Clarke served as a radar specialist during World War II and realised that geostationary satellites could be used in telecommunication. They are satellites that orbit almost directly above the equator and appear to be stationary to an observer on the ground. Clarke popularised the concept in a paper called "Extra-Terrestrial Relays - Can Rocket Stations Give Worldwide Radio Coverage?"published in the magazine Wireless World in 1945.

Clarke had a great trust in the progress of human civilisation. However, at times his optimism bordered on scientism although some of his views were at odds with mainstream science. For instance, he toyed with the idea that an ancient alien civilisation might have produced the human race.

Writing in Skeptical Inquirer in 2001, Clarke outlined his religious beliefs. He called God a hypothetical entity and said, "early in the next millennium the rise of 'statistical theology' would prove that there is no supernatural intervention in human affairs. Nor does the 'problem of evil' exist; it is an inevitable consequence of the bell-shaped curve of normal distribution."

Such views have nothing to do with science. Modern science was born and developed in the western world, thanks to a belief in a rational Creator God who designed natural laws. The great pioneers of modern science, such as Johann Kepler, Blaise Pascal and Sir Isaac Newton, were devout Christians.

Christians have not eschewed rocket science, either. Wernher von Braun, the "father" of the Apollo moon program, was a Christian who actually believed it was wrong to exclude the teaching of creation in science classes. The astronauts Jim Lovell, Frank Borman and William Anders who orbited the moon in December1968 chose the opening verses of Genesis as their Christmas message to earth.

Clarke, however, had little respect for Christianity. He was a firm believer in extraterrestrial life. He supported the SETI@home community that tries to get proof of alien intelligence by monitoring messages they might send us.

It is strange that the SETI people spend billions of taxpayer dollars on listening to messages that might never come. At the same time, they ignore the message coded in our DNA that speaks volumes of intelligent design. But, as Ben Stein shows in his soon to be aired film Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed most mainstream scientists do not tolerate any dissenting voices.

Science should be a quest for the truth but unfortunately staunch Darwinists have used their preconceived ideology of naturalism or the stance that nature is all that there is to exclude all views that deviate from theirs. Introduction
Emergency management is a dynamic process. Emergency preparedness for disaster management is the process of preparing, mitigating, responding, and recovering from any emergency situation. Individuals and organizations responsible for emergency management use different tools to save lives reduce human suffering and preserve economic assets before, during and after any catastrophic event. But nowadays, correct and timely information is a critical part of any successful emergency management program. The unique tool for emergency purpose is a web enabled Geographic Information System (GIS), which could provide accurate and timely information.

Generally, disasters are characterized by the scope of an emergency. An emergency becomes a disaster when it exceeds the capability of the local resources to manage it. Disaster is an event "... meeting at least one of the following criteria: kills 10 or more persons; affects 100 or more persons; leads to a declaration of state of emergency; or leads to call for international assistance." Disaster also involves humanitarian emergency, humanitarian actions, mass casualities etc. Effective disaster management requires rapid decisions and actions on behalf of relief workers. The scope of disasters is large (in terms of the number of people affected) and also the most important thing is the lack of resources to manage disasters.

Disaster management in developing countries exists within a complex political, social and economic environment, where a coherent and coordinated approach can be difficult to implement. As such, large-scale high magnitude - low frequency disasters will continue to overwhelm local disaster managers, prohibiting effective management, particularly during the response phase. Although most natural disasters cannot be prevented, disaster losses can be minimized when appropriate actions are taken which utilize the latest technology and real-time spatial data/information. Through GIS and remote sensing we can make data / information available, and answer questions concerning the spatial and temporal dimensions for disaster management.

In today's information technology disaster management rely on IT tools such as GIS, electronic mail, document sharing, web and database access. GIS database can be accessed for damage assessment or to locate critical infrastructure such as chemical facility that needs to be inspected and secured. High resolution images or video sent in a real-time situation from a remote location can allow experts to assess damage. Henceforth, GIS integrated with IT presents significant opportunities to greatly improve the effectiveness of emergency management.

Recently, the internet is gaining popularity as a mechanism that can facilitate the exchange of information/data (spatial and non-spatial) in time to warn a disaster. Initiatives such as the Global Disaster Information Network (GDIN) provide evidence of the importance and the value of disaster - related information, as well as the need to obtain and share it effectively. The aim of GDIN is to "provide the right information, in the right format, to the right person, in the right time to make the right decision" (GDIN, 2005). Spatial decision support systems, commonly considered as application specific software solutions (Rinner, 2003), are used in solving complex spatial problems where alternative decisions needs consideration. Wellar (1990) and Crossland et al. (1995) showed that the use of GIS as a type of Spatial Disaster Support System (SDSS) reduced the decision time and increased the accuracy of individual decision-makers, while Peng and Tsou (2003) the power and benefits of GIS. Integrating these technologies in an online, GIS based SDSS has the potential to increase the use and accessibility of spatial data, as well as the accuracy and efficiency of decision making, thereby improving the effectiveness of disaster response.

Hence for emergency preparedness and disaster management, GIS domains such as ArcGIS, ArcIMS, SQL Server and ASP were integrated and explored. Modules pertaining to emergency management were also developed by integrating the knowledge of experts, managers, programmers and developers, web enabled GIS techniques were used to manage nuclear, chemical, natural and many other disasters. These web enabled GIS based applications provides salient features for hazard alert, emergency response, emergency management, leverage investment, facilitates emergency alerts, periodic situational updates, community notifications, service disruptions, interagency coordination, e-Government solution and so forth.

Results and Discussion

Web Technology for Emergency Management

GIS system integrates ArcGIS, ArcIMS, SQL Server and ASP domain networks to form a web-based emergency preparedness / management system. Both spatial and aspatial were kept in GIS database. Coding for information retrieval, search capability, feature extraction were carried using ArcIMS and ASP. All the Objects, Methods, Modules and Components available within the software environment were utilized effectively, coded and programmed. The application is developed as a web enabled GIS on Microsoft Windows Platform. In all the applications for disaster management, Maps are the primary output of the system which, when displayed on computer screens, are more dynamic, potential and versatile (Alexander, 1991). This system complies with Coppock (1995) who points out that the technological developments intended for use in developing countries must be kept simple, considering the skills (both technical and bureaucratic) and resources available. The tools available in the webGIS applications and its features towards emergency management are formulated similarly. The potential of webGIS tools for nuclear, chemical and natural and many other disasters were discussed as follows.

Nuclear Disaster

Although construction and operation of nuclear power plants are closely monitored and regulated by the nuclear regulatory authorities, accidents, though unlikely, are possible. The most immediate danger from an accident at a nuclear power plant is the exposure to high level radiation.

Emergencies declared for nuclear power plant are defined in terms of notification of unusual event, alert, site area emergency and general emergency. Notification of unusual event means a problem has occurred at the plant, but no radiation leak is expected. Alert means that small amounts of radiation could leak inside the plant, but it will not affect the community. Site area emergency describes a more serious problem. Small amounts of radiation could leak from the plant. Area sirens may sound. Citizens are requested to listen to radio or television for instructions and be prepared to evacuate or find shelter. For addressing the above issues an emergency preparedness plan for nuclear power plant is developed using the recent scientific web enabled GIS technology.

The NuclearPlannerTM, a web GIS based application tool, provides a web-based evacuation preparedness for citizens living close to nuclear power plant, within the 10 mile radius. This is an important tool for strengthening relations with the community by reaching out to citizens with updated information and proactive planning tools. This delivers personalized response information to identify appropriate evacuation routes and response measures. Citizens living in risk area can identify their emergency reception centers, driving directions, and emergency exits. The system can also be integrated with weather, demographic data and real-time highway database and could help planners to evacuate peoples during the crucial time of natural disasters. Its major components includes end to end web-based solution, feature query, proximity analysis, emergency response plan module, evacuation routing module for public emergency, property query module, theme add in and on/off module, buffer analysis etc.

Chemical Disaster

Hazardous material are chemical substances, which if released or misused, can pose threat to the environment. These chemicals are used in industry, agriculture, medicine, research, and consumer goods. As many as 5,00,000 products pose physical or health hazards and can be defined as "hazardous chemicals." Each year, over 1,000 new synthetic chemicals are introduced. Hazardous materials come in the form of explosives, flammable and combustible substances, poisons, and radioactive materials. These substances are most often released as a result of transportation accidents or because of chemical accidents in manufacturing plants.

In the early hours of Monday, Dec 3, 1984 a toxic cloud of methyl isocyanate (MIC) gas enveloped the hundreds of shanties and huts surrounding a pesticide plant in Bhopal, India. Later, a deadly cloud slowly drifted in the cool night air through streets in surrounding sections, sleeping residents awoke, coughing, and rubbing painfully stinging eyes. By the time the gas cleared at dawn, many were dead. Four months after the tragedy, the Indian government reported the parliament that 1,430 people had died. In 1991 the official Indian government panel charged with tabulating deaths and injuries updated the count to more than 3,800 dead and approximately 11,000 with disabilities. Considering the importance of emergency preparedness for these chemical disasters a webGIS tool Tier II Manager TM is developed.

This is ensured with multiple levels of security to appropriate groups in order to have access for appropriate data and functionality.

It streamlines the process of chemical inventory reporting. Chemical storage facilities can submit regulatory and planning information through a set of simple on-line forms. Planners can access real-time information to create emergency response plans and carry out comprehensive oversight activities. When rapid response is necessary, first responders can map all chemical storage facilities and instantly retrieve other supplemental information like site plans while mobilizing toward the emergency site. This provides a comprehensive, cost-effective way to meet regulatory requirements and provides emergency response information at the critical moment decision-making in no time. Its major components includes end-to-end web-based solution, chemical storage facility analysis tool with respect to infrastructure and demographics, automated authority level query tool for spatial planning, query tool for an extensive database - data retrieved in seconds and as an add-in for any back-end database platforms. For first responders, the application can be deployed wirelessly or as a standalone version, covers non-coverage areas and it also possess hierarchical level security for end users.

This Disaster Warning System is aimed to continuously alert the most geographically appropriate emergency response personnel such as rescue, fire, police, and ambulance personnel, to allow much quicker and more accurate first response efforts and further reduce disaster impacts on lives and property.

Combining the power of GIS mapping analysis and notification capabilities, the system facilitates end-to-end response and recovery. It helps to analyze a situation, send out calls, and collect responses from thousands of people in an hour using flexible standard based tools. DWS differs from any location with an internet connection, providing powerful decision-making and proactive notification capabilities.

It brings together the best in speech technology with the power of mapping through GIS to provide Emergency Response Managers with the speed and flexibility to meet even the most challenging notification scenarios. Collision A Clue To Hot Heavenly Body

When you receive the Seal you will look in awe at the wonders of the universe. One such wonder is quite a strange heavenly body--a planet that seems to be the remains of two planets that collided.

Astronomers are puzzled about this planet, named 2M1207B. It defies any explanation currently known. The location and age are not explainable by anything astronomers know, and neither are the temperature and luminosity.

Of course astronomers are trying to explain the strange phenomenon, an object that is strange and "requires a strange explanation." And yet the explanation is still a theory.

If you look in the area of the constellation Centaurus in the night sky, you will be able to see a brown dwarf star named 2M1207A. This star is known to be relatively young, at an age of 8 million years.

So 2M1207B, the planet revolving around that brown dwarf, is no older than it. According to what astronomers know of the temperature of planets, the age of the planet indicates that it should be no hotter than 1300 degrees Fahrenheit.

But astronomers have found that 2M1207B is actually much hotter. It actually registers at 2400 degrees F. And the only way they know to explain this high temperature is that it was caused by a protoplanetary collision.

Astronomers are also puzzled by the luminosity of the planet. Because it is so hot it is supposed to be more luminous. But it is 10 times more faint than it is supposed to be.

Previously they theorized that a dusty disk is obscuring the luminosity of the planet. But now some astronomers have a new theory: the planet is smaller than thought with a smaller surface area radiating energy.

These astronomers believe 2M1207B has a radius of just over 30,000 miles. So it is comparable in size to Saturn in our own solar system, which is 37,000 miles in radius.

And how could it be so hot millions of years after its birth? It must have collided with another planet, and that huge collision must have happened relatively recently so the heat from the collision is still radiating from it.

These collisions are known to happen. They happened in our own solar system. In fact it is believed that our own moon of the planet earth was formed when the earth hit an object with 10 percent of its mass.

So the theory is that 2M1207B, about the size of Saturn, hit a planet about 3 times as big as earth. And when the planets collided, according to the theory, they stuck together!

It is thought that it would take 100,000 years for the heat generated by the planet to dissipate away. So this collision must have happened recently and is a rare treat; it is an unlikely event, against the odds of happening.

Toilet Training Your Ferret

Luckily ferrets can be trained to use a litter tray just like cats. They are very intelligent and like to be clean, so they should pick it up quickly. Your whole family should be involved in your ferret training. You can begin ferret litter training any time, although the sooner you start, the happier you and your ferret will be.

Even if you have not trained your ferret you will notice that he will pick a spot, usually in a private corner somewhere, and return to that spot when he has to poop. Ferrets do not relate having their noses rubbed in their poop with the fact that they missed the pan, so please don't do it. Ferrets do not cover their waste, so scooping is a daily necessity and will help minimize odour. Ferrets are more likely to use a clean pan. You will find that ferrets who feel their litter box isn't clean enough will often go next to it.

Training

Training techniques must be adapted to individual personalities, but some basic principles apply. Put some feces into your ferret's new pan and then put him in there. He will probably have a sniff around and should get the idea. If you see him go to the pan and go to the toilet praise and maybe even offer a healthy treat.

If he goes outside of the pan, do not scold him. Simply place him and his poop into the pan. Eventually he should get it. For some older ferrets this may take time. Most of the time, gently reminding him where the litter box is can be enough.

Litter

Clumping cat litters should not be used, unless you place the powder under other forms of litter so the ferret does not have access to the clumping litter (make sure the ferret is not a digger). Some ferrets don't like the feel of clay litter between their toes. Additionally, ferrets "wipe their bottoms" after using their litter pan, and clumping litter particles can adhere to the ferret, and absorb too much moisture from soft tissue. Most of the time, gently reminding him where the litter box is can be enough.

Be careful not to use anything that will give off dust particles.

In conclusion it may take some time, but it will be worth it when you have a fully toilet trained ferret running around the house. Maybe then you could move onto some other more advanced training?

- Bettas don't need nearly as much space as other fish. Since they're comfortable in stagnant water, a small tank with a bit of airflow will be fine for them. I do recommend a small tank over the tiny bowl they come in so you don't have to change their water daily, but the tank can still be a lot smaller than what other fish need.

- They're amazingly friendly and animated. Bettas will soon learn to recognize their handler and "dance" around when they see you. They're happy to follow your finger around and play games for you.

When you look at the small cost of the fish, food, and set-up along with the bright colors, ease of care, and great interaction they make the perfect first pet for children. Kids love the pretty, animated betta fish and can learn responsibility while caring for them.

Feeding Crickets

When feeding crickets to your reptiles or other pets there are a few things you nee to do to ensure the best nutritional value. Remember you are what you eat. There is a huge advantage to keeping the crickets at home or breeding your own allowing you to "gut load" them before you feed them to your pet. Simply put, gut loading is feeling your feeder insects healthy food before you offer them to your reptiles. The large commercial breeders that supply most pet stores feed their crickets the cheapest food they can find. While these foods will keep the crickets alive they do little if anything for your pet reptiles.

There are products available on the market that are especially made to gut load crickets. For the most part these products are good quality and get the job done. Keep in mind that these products are not cheap though. I have been gut loading my crickets without theses products for years. I provide a small dish full of dry dog or cat food. I sprinkle a bit of reptile vitamins and calcium on this. I also give me crickets vegetables like mustard, and collard greens, kale, squash and peels from fruits like papaya, apples, and pears. You can also offer fish flakes (their favorite).

The key is to provide your pet reptiles the best most balanced diet possible. The bigger wider the variety of foods you feed your crickets you will accomplish this task without a lot of work. Remember you don't have to break the bank to gut load your crickets. Simply feed them your leftover scraps from the fruit and vegetables that your family eat.

Global warming affects negatively the environment and everything in it. There are more than just humans that are affected by it. In fact, such a negative process has been hasted by the human race through pollution. While the Earth is trying its best to cool out its environment by using its natural resources such as volcanic eruptions, it cannot seem to be able to be as effective as needed.

Several species are affected negatively by global warming, especially at the Poles. In fact, as these regions are the most vulnerable ones, the living beings inhabiting these areas are fighting for their own survival. Arctic whales such as Bowheads, Belugas and Narwhals are also suffering from global warming. How does global warming affect Arctic whales?

Global warming is a process affecting the temperature of the atmosphere, which provides negative effects on the environment, its fauna, its flora as well as climates. In fact, it has been creating such a havoc that several species either had to adapt, become endangered of face extinction.

You see, now that global warming has been responsible for melting up to 14% of the ice-capped regions at the poles since the 1970s it has been affecting Arctic whales species such as the Beluga and the Narwhal more than any other type of whales as these species feed on the creatures living on ice-edges areas.

Also, as the water temperature is rising, other whale species that are usually living in more temperate waters are now moving up North, forcing Belugas and Narwhals to either share their food and habitat with them or retire to regions located to higher latitude regions.

Such a move may have its advantages in a way, but it can also affect the survival of numerous members of these species as open water holes are not as high in numbers which would sentence many of them to death by drowning.

As if global warning is not enough, the Arctic whales also have to fight off pollution, tourism, fishing as well as industrial and military activities since the opening of the Northwest Passage.

You see, the noise and carbon dioxide affecting their natural habitat does not only affect the quality of life of the Arctic whales, it also affects their well-fare and their survival.

Arctic whales such as Belugas and Bowheads have been known to flee whale watching tours as far as 35 kilometers away from these ships. Humans are not only responsible for the harm done by global warming, pollution and Inuit fishing but the effects are such that it is imperative that they take these matters into their own hands by solving or at least diminish the severity of it by taking action.

The conservation status of the Beluga whale is currently stated as vulnerable but the conditions imposed on this specie may soon put it on the endangered species list. While Bowheads are currently part of that list, if nothing is done to remediate or at least diminish the effects of the global warming on these poor marine mammals, they may soon face extinction.

As for the Narwhal, often known as a legendary creature that is in fact reality, its conservation status may now be of special concern but if things continue this way, in the near future, their existence may only exist between the lines of a legend printed in a book.

Dont let Arctic whales become part of history. Put an end to global warming and pollution, making such changes, historic ones! After all, what humans started they can solve as well. Didnt your parents ever taught you to clean up your mess before starting overand succeeding?

What are the 39 types of sharks known to harm humans? Well, as soon as you read this question, your mind probably started racing, your heartbeat became more rapid and your throat dried out. The question that probably consumes your thoughts right now is: Are there that many dangerous species of sharks out there?

Well, calm down. Yes there are 39 types of sharks known to have harmed humans but only three species were actually involved in unprovoked shark attacks. No, Jaws itself, better known as a Great White shark was not one of these species. Surprised? In fact, out of 1190 shark attacks between 1580 and 2005, there were only 3 provoked shark attacks, one being fatal. Each of the following species was involved in one shark attack: the Hammerhead shark, the Blue shark and the Shortfin Mako shark. The fatal attack was done by the Hammerhead shark.

So according to the ISAF (International Shark Attack File) between 1580 and 2005, there were 1187 unprovoked shark attacks done by 36 types of sharks. In fact, 17 of the 36 species involved in unprovoked shark attacks were responsible for 5 shark attacks or less. These types of sharks are: the Galapagos shark, the Tope shark, the Silvertip shark, the Spiny Dogfish shark, the Tresher shark, The Bignose shark, the Smooth Dogfish shark, the Basking shark, the Horn shark, the Sixgill shark, the Whale shark, the Greenland shark, the Whitetip Reef shark, the Porbeagle shark, the Leopard shark, the Mako shark and the Great Hammerhead shark.

Of the remaining 19 types of sharks known to harm humans, 6 types of sharks are responsible for 6 to 9 unprovoked shark attacks. These are the following species: the Grey Reef shark, the Oceanic Whitetip shark, the Sandbar shark, the Sevengill shark, the Dusky shark and the Silky shark.

Of the 13 types of sharks that are left, 3 species are responsible for 14 to 19 unprovoked shark attacks. These are the following types of sharks: the Spinner shark, the Blacktip Reef shark and the Bronze Whaler shark.

Where Do You Start when Building a Snake Cage?

When I was making my first cage my wife Cheryl came out into the shed and asked me what I was doing. I mumbled or grunted something about "building snake cage" whilst earnestly trying to figure out some small detail or putting in an annoying screw (I'm not sure which), to which she rolled her eyes and ambled back into the house - I believe shaking her head and possibly rolling her eyes.

Anyway, I wanted to make a good cage. I had made one already but it was far too small as I had divided it into two sections by placing a timber divider in the middle. It cut the cage in half and was close enough to the floor to prevent interaction while leaving enough space to slide a heat mat under. It covered about 1/2 to 2/3 of the cage either side of the middle.

I decided to do it that way as it cheaper than making two cages and the two children's pythons were still small, having just graduated from the plastic containers. (When I housed them in the plastic containers I used small terracotta plant bases for their hides. I cut a little out of the side of the base for the entrance - this is a good tip for juveniles and young snakes or lizards)

I housed the two juvenile carpet pythons in that cage, one each side, but as they grew I knew I needed to make another cage.

So I did some research and with a bit of help from pet shops and some research on the web I was able to come up with what I thought was a simple snake cage plan.

A snake cage design that:

- was easy to make
- was strong
- looked good
- had appropriate thermal properties
- had easy access
- was lockable
- was easily maintained.

I suppose I should back up a bit and tell you how I made the first snake cage. Having two juvenile snakes about to graduate from their small plastic cages meant I needed accommodation. Initially I thought I had to make two snake cages with two sets of heat mats, thermostats (I know there are alternatives), lighting and twice the amount of materials.

So I decided, after multiple diagrams and fiddling about, to make one cage and divide it in half. I still needed to heat both sides. I placed a divider in the cage. It was close enough to the floor to prevent the snakes going underneath yet high enough to allow the Flexiwatt heat pad to slide underneath.

I also made the divider so that it fitted in the cage exactly but only held in place by screws. These screws could then be removed if I wanted to make the cage larger and build a second cage.

I made a number of mistakes with this cage.

The front was glass but it was fitted and did not slide or move. There were two hinged lids on top, one for each side. As I had no experience, it didn't occur to me that his was a poor design. I soon found that it was. I should have at least made a door at the front, either sliding or drop down. The top door was a good idea, but not on its own.

I chose to make the door on my new cage a single drop down door for a number of reasons.

First and foremost was ease. I didn't have to slide the door and get a reptile from the other end as the snakes dont move out of the cage very quickly. If you have dragons or frisky reptiles it is better to have either a sliding door or two drop downs or, alternatively a combination ie a drop down door at the front with a hinged roof on top. This allows ease of access from above to retrieve the reptiles and also ease of access from the front for cleaning and accessorizing.

Drop down doors are the easiest to make and the most forgiving of mistakes, particularly plexiglass. Drop down glass doors and sliding doors require a little more effort, and time. If you have limited room, a sliding door is much more satisfactory. All my subsequent cages have sliding doors but that is a personal choice.

As I had carpet pythons, I did not need to have a UV light - usually you can use supplements to provide any extra dietary needs with snakes. If I had wanted to put in a UV light for a lizard in the first reptile cage I made, I would have had some difficulty because the hinged roof and fixed front would have made the angle of access when installing a light difficult. I had effectively eliminated half the roof and could not access the back of the cage roof easily. The light fitting should have been installed at the same stage as the half roof something I neglected to think of at the time.

I also chose to make my own heat mats using Flexwatt. My first commercial mat was far too hot and buckled one of my plastic cages and the timber it was sitting on. I had to throw it out. According to the instructions it was supposed to self regulate and not require a thermostat. It didn't work. So I decided to make my own heat mat and attach it to a thermostat. No problems so far and the results are far better.

To make the mat, I drilled holes in the back of the snake cage and dismantled an old electrical cord. I attached a plug I bought from the hardware and attached it to one end and I soldered the other ends onto the mat. I wanted to use a detachable plug so I could thread the cord through a small hole in the back of the cage. I wanted the hole to be small enough to prevent escape, even by small snakes.

The soldering was a bit difficult as the soldering iron had not been refurbished ( I have since refurbished it and it works perfectly now - you can find out how to refurbish you soldering iron in my book "How to Build Reptile Enclosures".)

I also had to drill a small hole in the back of the cage for the thermostat probe, which sat on top of the heat mat. I stuck the heat mat down with some tape but have since used double sided tape or clear duct tape as holds on better and longer.

You can put the heat mat on the base and then placed thin ply or something similar over the top. I have yet to try this method. I have even seen snake cages where tiles were glued and placed over the heat mat, after applying a layer of glue or similar substance. I now use inexpensive vinyl over the heat mat, as it is easily cleaned, and have newspaper or other substrates on top of that again.

Melamine also makes a good base as it is easily washable. Silicone should be placed around the edges to prevent water damage and leakage into the joins, but there is a trick to making a smooth silicone joint.

Placing the lights in the snake cage is relatively easy. I decided that I would place an in-line switch to each light so I could control them from outside the cage without having to scrounge around finding the cord or a switch on a switch board. I have since automated all of these using timers.

I have quite a good range of tools in my shed but I really didn't need a lot to make the cages. I think for most people, cutting the timber square is one of the biggest issues. There are ways around this so that constructing the cage is relatively easy (you can find these out in the book "How to Build Reptile Enclosures").

I did a lot of looking around at various cages, trying to determine the best material to build them from. I built mine using MDF. I use it for a number of reasons.

- It has good thermal properties
- It's easy to use
- It comes out well painted
- It's easy to sand
- It does not buckle easily
- You can work with relatively thin (1/2") material making it not too heavy

You do need to be a bit careful cutting it and I would advise using a mask. It can be very dusty.

You also need to be a bit careful putting in screws. Put them in too hard and you damage the hole. They will not hold properly.

I would not advise making a snake or other reptile cage from pine or cedar. These materials can be dangerous to reptiles. A few pieces of pine for framing is fine but not the whole cage.

Another good material is plywood. I do not use it mostly because it can be splintery. It does look good however if you finish it with a timber finish a clear coat.

I also painted my cages (spray paint gives a nice finish). I let them dry out for about a week before I put the animals in there. This is to ensure that the paint has time to cure and that the amount of vapor it releases has declined enough to be no threat to the snakes. You can pop your head in the cage after 4 or 5 days and smell the inside of the cage. When the paint smell has almost gone ,the snake or lizard cage is safe to put the animals in.

After painting it's just a matter of adding locks, door holders and accessories like climbing branches, rocks, hides, water bowls, fake rock walls and whatever you fancy.

My children's pythons, blue tongued lizards and bearded dragon now happily live in their respective habitats.

Pi is perhaps the most important mathematical constant. It appears in various formulas throughout math and science in fields as diverse as physics, statistics, and sociology. Although pi is defined in terms of the geometry of a circle, most applications of this number do not directly involve circles.

Since ancient times, people have been fascinated by pi. This is hardly a surprise, since the circle is one of the most basic, but nevertheless fascinating, geometric figures. Pi is defined as the ratio of the circumference to the diameter of a circle. (Any circle will work, since all circles are similar.) Rounded to 10 decimal places, its value is 3.1415926536.

Part of what makes pi fascinating is that it appears in several other formulas involving circles or spheres. For instance, the area of a circle is equal to pi times the square of its radius. Further, the surface area of a sphere is equal to 4 pi times the square of its radius, and its volume is equal to 4/3 pi times the cube of its radius. In fact, the formulas for the content of all higher dimensional analogs of the sphere also involve pi.

As mentioned, pi also appears in many formulas not directly involving circles or spheres. For instance, the periods of all the trigonometric functions are either equal to pi or 2 pi. Although trig functions may be defined in terms of a circle, they are usually used in contexts not directly involving circles. Another place pi is widely used is in the normal distribution, which is commonly used in statistics, whose formula involves the square root of pi.

The computation of pi has a long and fascinating history. Some of the most elaborate mathematical methods have been used in devising various formulas for pi. By the late 19th century, its value had been computed by hand to several hundred decimal places. Since the dawn of the computer age in the mid-20th century, the number of calculated digits of pi has skyrocketed. Since 2002, its value has been known to over a trillion decimal places - enough to fill a large library!

Part of the reason some mathematicians are fascinated with calculating so many digits of pi is in order to look for patterns in its digits. So far, no obvious ones have been found. It has been conjectured that pi is a normal number, meaning that every finite pattern of digits in every base occurs infinitely often in pi with the same frequency which would be expected if the digits were random.

In 1995, an amazing formula was found for pi, which allows one to compute hexadecimal (base 16) digits of pi without having to compute any previous digits. This formula was used in 2000 to compute the quadrillionth (10^15th) hexadecimal digit of pi, which happens to be 0. Several similar formulas have since been discovered, some in other bases, but none in base 10 have yet been found.

Painting Solar Cells Onto Steel

Who knew painting could be so energy efficient? Swansea University researchers are looking into ways of painting solar cells onto pliable steel surfaces in the hope of generating electricity from the process. The allegation is that this method could produce the same amount of electricity as 50 wind farms.

Dr Dave Worsley, a Reader in the Materials Research Centre at the University's School of Engineering has this to say:

"Corus Colours produces around 100 million square metres of steel building cladding a year. If this was treated with the photovoltaic material, and assuming a conservative 5% energy conversion rate, then we could be looking at generating 4,500 gigawatts of electricity through the solar cells annually. That's the equivalent output of roughly 50 wind farms."

Although this is really the first time the capabilities of the outside of the steel have been investigated, the University has high hopes of the prospects. One of the Doctorate students in the Engineering department had been exploring how sunlight interacts with paint. This exploration prompted a new development - "a photovoltaic method of capturing solar energy."

Photovoltaic means that the paint is capable of producing a voltage when exposed to radiant energy, especially light. The materials that Swansea is producing are, according to them, more efficient at capturing low light radiation.

The University initially performed the study via a research grant from Welsh Assembly Government's Welsh Energy Research Centre, and this allowed from a great deal of the beginning data to be accumulated. Because that study proved to be so successful, an additional 1.5 million was awarded to the project for further evaluations.

In order to understand irrigation water EC (Electrical Conductivity), we first have to understand the meaning of TDS.

TDS stands for Total Dissolved Solids, i.e the total amount of solids dissolved in water, mainly mineral salts.

TDS is measured in ppm (parts per million) or in mg/l.

What Does TDS Has To do With Electrical Conductivity?

Since it is hard to measure the TDS in the field, The EC of the water is as a measure for TDS. Measuring water EC is quick, inexpensive, and can be determined using portable meters.

Electrical conductivity reflects the capacity of water to conduct electrical current, and is directly related to the concentration of salts dissolved in water, though to TDS. This is because the salts dissolve into positively charged ions, as well as negatively charged ions, that conduct electricity. This is why distilled water have EC of 0, and will not conduct electricity.

Nevertheless, when the salt concentration reaches beyond a certain level, EC is no longer directly related to this concentration, because ion-pairs are formed. Ion pairs weaken each other's charge, so that above a this level, higher TDS will not result in equally higher EC.

Electrical conductivity of water is also temperature dependent: the higher the temperature, the higher the conductivity. Electrical conductivity of water increases by 2-3% for an increase of 1 degree Celsius of water temperature. Many EC meters nowadays automatically standardize the readings to a 25oC.

Why You Should Measure The Electrical Conductivity

We can say that EC is actually a measure of salinity. Excessively high salinity can affect plants in several ways:

1. Specific toxicity of a particular ion (such as Sodium)

2. Higher osmotic pressure around the roots prevents an efficient water absorption by the plant.

Some plants are more susceptible to salinity effects than others.

What Does The EC Reading Really Mean?

While water EC is a good indicator of total salinity, it still doesn't provide any information about the ion composition of the water. The same EC values can be measured in low quality water (e.g.water rich with Sodium, Boron and Fluorides) as well as in high quality irrigation water (e.g. adequately fertilized water with appropriate nutrient concentrations and ratios).

The commonly used units for measuring water EC are:

S/cm (microSiemens/cm)
or
dS/m (deciSiemens/m)

Where: 1000 s/cm = 1 dS/m

Converting EC to TDS can be easily done using the following calculation:

TDS (ppm) = 0.67 X EC (S/cm) = 670 X EC (dS/m)

Tips On Electrical Conductivity Of Irrigation Water

Here are some tips to make the measurements of electrical conductivity reliable:

1. Most EC meters have the following information indicated on them, or in their manuals:

The measurement units - different meters may use different units, e.g. ds/m or s/cm.

The range of the measurement.

Whether the instrument automatically compensates for temperature. If it doesn't, the measurement of the water EC should be done at 25oC.

2. Calibrate your EC meter regularly.

3. Never immerse the meter totally, but only up to the level indicated in the instructions.

The Duck-billed platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus) is an enigmatic creature that defies simple classifications. It is a mosaic that differs considerably from all other known animals. It is a mammal with a duck's bill, a rather long tail and webbed feet. Females do not give birth to live offspring but baby platypuses start their wanderings by cracking an egg open.

It was thought that the platypus, which currently only lives in Australia and Tasmania, and closely related species separated from a common ancestor some 17-65 million years ago. But a new study shows that this view is incorrect. According to National Geographic News, a research team led by Timothy Rowe at the University of Texas in Austin used CT scanning to examine a jaw bone of the species Teinolophos. It was supposed that Teinolophos, which is said to have lived 112.5 to 122 million years ago, was the ancestor present-day platypuses.

The study revealed that the animal had the same kind of capacity to sense its prey with an electric receptor in its nose as a platypus. The researchers concluded that what they thought was a Teinolophos jawbone actually belonged to a platypus. In other words, platypuses already lived with the dinosaurs.

Recently, New Scientist wrote about Chinese salamanders that were said to have lived over 100 million years before the advent of Tyrannosaurus rex. The salamander, which can be approximately1.8 meters (about six feet) long, is an endangered species, but it still lives in China.

Many animal species seem to remain surprisingly similar for eons, resisting change into other species. This poses serious problems for Darwinian evolution.

Science Projects From An Egg

I have a great science project to do and it is very easy. Make sure you have your parents present or help you with this since it does require using matches.

Get a glass bottle that is fairly tall and can hold an egg in the mouth of the bottle. Make sure the egg can sit in the mouth a little bit but not fall through. Also you want to make sure it is not just perched on the top of the bottle opening. It should fit into the opening slightly.

You will want a hard boiled egg. If you do not have one you will need to cook it. Take a small pot or saucepan and put the egg in the pot and cover with water just until the water covers the top. Turn on the burner and wait until the water comes to a boil. Let it boil for 7 minutes. Turn off the heat and drain the water, but be careful not to burn yourself with the hot water. There is a lot of steam from boiling water. You may want a parent to help you with this. Let the egg cool before you peel it.

Once it is peeled you are ready to begin the experiment.

Now have three matches ready to go.

Make sure the bottle is clean and does not have water or other fluid inside of it.

Light each match and quickly drop into the bottle while still lit and there is flame. Light the next one right away and throw it into the bottle and light the last match and once again while it is still burning drop it into the bottom of the bottle.

Now place the egg on top of the bottle opening and sit back and wait.

After a short time the egg will fall through the bottle. Once it falls through the hole the egg will not be able to come back out.
You can use a fork or knife to get inside the break up the egg to remove it.

Post Hibernation Anorexia (PHA) in Tortoises

Post hibernation anorexia (PHA) is a very common problem in pet tortoises at this time of the year, and can be frustrating to treat. Prevention is much preferable to treatment, and with the correct husbandry, dietary practices and hibernation preparation, this is easily achievable.

Sadly, post hibernation problems recur each year. Many pet tortoises are still kept by owners who are ignorant of their requirements regarding heat and UVb light provision, and the fact that many tortoises can cope with poor husbandry for relatively long periods before showing clinical signs can mask the problem.

What is post hibernation anorexia (PHA)?

PHA is when a tortoise fails to eat in the days and weeks following waking from hibernation. It is not a disease in itself, merely a descriptive term that reflects underlying disease(s).

Why does PHA happen?

The main reasons for PHA occurring are:

The tortoise was not fit enough to hibernate in the first place.
The hibernation was inadequately set up or poorly monitored.
The hibernation lasted too long.

A veterinarian treating a case of PHA must first play detective to find out the previous husbandry practices, diet and health problems of the tortoise, and ascertain the precise hibernation set up the owner was using.

Tortoises are particularly vulnerable during the post hibernation period. When they wake they are usually very weak and have a low white blood cell count, meaning they are susceptible to infection. They also have a high urea level, due to the accumulation of metabolic toxins. This is exacerbated if the tortoise is dehydrated or has had a very long hibernation period. The combination of a high white blood cell count and a high urea level means that if anything else goes wrong, there is very little time available to diagnose and treat the problem.

The problem is made worse in countries with an unnatural climate, such as the UK. In the wild, most tortoises have a long summer to prepare them for a short winter, and therefore a short hibernation period. In countries like the UK, tortoises have a short summer to prepare for a long hibernation period. It is very important therefore to artificially control the duration of hibernation, or else the tortoise may be fatally weakened and unable to recover organ function properly.

The recommended maximum length for a hibernation is 3 months for a healthy adult tortoise, so most of them will need waking toward the end of January, and kept inside a warm enclosure until the summer.

The owner responsibilities

When a tortoise wakes from hibernation, the owner should carefully check for clinical signs such as sunken eyes (suggests dehydration) or wounds to the limbs (usually due to bites from rodents when tortoises have been hibernated outside). If any problems are suspected, veterinary help should be sought immediately.

If all seems well, tortoises should be bathed daily in shallow warm water and housed in an indoor enclosure, kept at 22 to 25 degrees centigrade, with both a basking lamp and a UVb light provided.

A healthy tortoise should start to eat and urinate within a week. If this does not occur, veterinary attention is required. The owner must closely monitor appetite, thirst, urination, defaecation and activity for at least three weeks post hibernation. If the tortoise fails to urinate within 6 weeks of waking, the prognosis is very poor sadly.

MAJOR CAUSES OF PHA

Excessive duration of hibernation period

Basically, those longer than 3 months. This occurs in tortoises left outside for the winter.

Low white blood cell count

This can sometimes have been present before hibernation. Stress and seasonal changes in reproductive hormones can play a role. The tortoise will be immunosuppressed on waking and if warmed too quickly, disease causing microorganisms will multiply and cause infections such as runny nose syndrome.

Disease or injury during hibernation

Rat bites and frost damage are two common injuries that occur during hibernation. Blindness can also occur, which is sometimes overlooked.

Poor post hibernation management

This includes failing to rehydrate the tortoise by bathing etc, not realizing the hibernation was over and inadequate food or heat provision.

Undetected long term diseases

Health problems have often developed over a very long period, with hibernation being the final straw which pushes the tortoise over the edge. Examples of diseases affecting tortoises are mycotic (fungal) infections, viral infections, kidney failure, egg retention, liver disease, disease of the digestive tract and eye problems.

Treating PHA can be very frustrating for the veterinarian. It is much preferable to do all you can to stop it from occurring in the first place. Good vets will suggest a pre hibernation consultation for the following season, where long term husbandry and care can be discussed.

Swimming With Pink Dolphins In The Pampas

Tayne Ruddock shares his adventures from South America: The Pampas area I visited consists mostly of wetlands with a main river and its tributaries winding through it. The vegetation varies from grasslands dotted with trees to dense stands of reeds to pockets of forested areas. The river courses are lined with trees, some of them standing well into the river. In some places, sheltered from the main current, the river surface is covered in an assortment of water plants. Its an incredibly beautiful area and it supports an abundance of animals.

There were 7 of us in my group plus our guide, and we spent 3 days in the Pampas. Even with the extreme heat and humidity, the dust, and the blasted mosquitoes, we had an incredible time. Our guide was great, our camp was in the trees right on the river, and we filled our days with activities like cruising up and down the river on our canoe, tromping through swampy reed beds, having sundowners at the nearby river-bar (standing on stilts in the river shallows), playing football on the mini-pampas soccer field (where I mustve sweated out at least my own body weight), and going on night cruises under the stars. I could go on and on about the variety of wildlife we saw: mammals, reptiles, birds (hundreds of species of), amphibians, insects etc, etc. But there was one animal which I was able to interact with and this is something I will never forget.

The pink river dolphin is a strange animal. For starters, its pink! Its dorsal and pectoral fins are tiny and its spine is particularly flexible. It has evolved this way for more manoeuvrability in amongst the aquatic vegetation and tree trunks standing in the river. As the water is very murky, it navigates solely by sonar. It's head curves down sharply to its snout which is long and thin - almost beak like. They are pretty big, maybe 2 to 2,5m long.

As we traveled down the river in our canoe, we could occasionally see their pink backs rising out of the water as they surfaced for air. Their blow holes opened and we could clearly hear the sharp exhale and intake of breath.

On one of the days we went to a wide part of the river where some areas were sheltered from the main current by stands of vegetation growing in the water - an area favoured by the dolphins.

Here we had an opportunity to swim with them. I was very keen on this idea and was in the water very soon after we stopped. I swam towards an area where I could see many of them rising. It was damn scary, considering I was sharing the water with caiman (alligator type reptiles), piranhas, and anacondas, whilst also having minor concerns about certain micro-organisms swimming up my urethra.

Also, the water was so full of silt, it was coffee colour. I couldnt see my hand 10cm under the water. In these circumstances try to imagine the shock and adrenaline surge running through my body when a dolphin came up and bit my foot!!!!!!!!! DAMN!!! I've never had such a fright before. It took all my will power not to frantically propeller my arms and speed-swim back to the boat and jump back on. But I gathered my balls and swam further out.

Another one took a playful nibble at my ankle. It was still nerve-wracking, because I never knew when to expect them and where they were coming from. I got used to it though and they started rising up next to me, sometimes brushing past me. I cant find the words to say how awestruck I was. They were playful and mischievous and would sometimes frighten the crap out of me with synchronized movements. At one point, 3 came past me at the same time, 2 past my head, splashing me in the face with their tail fins at the same time, while the other one swam under me, brushing my foot with its dorsal fin. One came by and gave me a soft slap in the ear with its tail fin. It was unbelievable!

I stayed and swam with them as long as I could. I went back to the camp very happy.

Easy Science Project Idea For 8th Grade Student

Among reptile geeks like myself, these are often referred to as stupid feeding errors or SFEs. I myself made an SFE several years ago with an otherwise docile rainbow boa, but I haven't repeated the error since then. If it will only eat these food items instead of pinky mice, you must coat them in a vitamin and calcium supplement. A good balanced vitamin supplement is Repton.

3) Try offering the food at different times of the day. Most snakes are primarily nocturnal; however they may prefer to take the food in the early hours of the morning rather than evening.

4) Place the food in different areas of the vivarium. Try up higher in a branch or underneath the hiding area. Many keepers have had success by placing a rodent in the middle of a toilet roll. The snake will feel secure in this and is a perfect hide area to safely eat its prey.

5) The temperature of the food is sometimes a stimulant. Keep the food at normal room temperature to begin with, but if this fails, place it on a radiator or something similar until the food item is hot.

6) If your snake is a hatchling, try and find a small, dark pot with a secure lid. The tubs which wax moth larvae are offered in are perfect. Think Outside of the Box

In today's world of eco-friendly inventions, the electric car is getting its fair share of exposure. Not only are gas prices at an all-time high right now, but the fuel emissions that emanate from petroleum juiced engines cause a breakdown in what we desire to be clean air. An electric car emits absolutely no emissions due to the lack of a tailpipe, as well as zero evaporative discharge from a fuel system.

The invention of the electric vehicle has been around for a little while, and the sophistication of the design keeps getting better. Options include anything from a car that affords the driver a short trip to the local grocery store, to the types that look like your run of the mill vehicle and allows for a considerably longer excursion.

So, beside the characteristics already mentioned, what are the benefits of owning and driving an electric vehicle? Let's reiterate the fact that electric cars do not emit poisonous toxins into the air we also have to breathe. If more people drove these types of vehicles, we could, as a whole, reduce the carbon dioxide levels in the air. For those who don't know what the effects of carbon dioxide are, let me tell you. Quite simply, carbon dioxide adds to the global warming effects we currently experience because of the years of exposure the air has succumbed to from the many different toxins being emitted.

In addition to the advantages we will obtain if we reduce the levels of carbon dioxide in the air, we will also reduce some of the cancer risks that we, unfortunately, currently see a great deal of. Beside carbon dioxide, a toxic pollutant called benzene is seen in petroleum. Benzene has many ill effects. On top of a recognized cancer risk, benzene can cause breathing disorders and dizziness when an individual encounters a high level of contact. An increase in electric vehicle drivers will allow for the levels in the air of this impurity to be diminished.

As stated above, many electric cars have been, and continue to be, marketed for ecological purposes. In fact, GE has invested a total of $24 million into its new Th!nk electric car. GE will be revealing this vehicle for the first time at the Geneva Auto Show, which started March 6th and will go until March 16th. Weighing in at only 350 kilograms, this car will likely be able to see speeds of around 85 MPH.

The dynamic of the engine will charge the battery, allowing the Th!nk to travel about 280 miles before having to be recharged. GE alleges that the car will go from 0-60mph in eight seconds.

Obviously the Th!nk is not going to be entering into any drag races or the Indy 500, but it is well equipped for the necessities of city driving. The main advantage, as with all eco-friendly cars, is the lack of toxins that are being sent up into the air. One more option to make the world a greener place!

Pet Rats - Why They Make Great Pets

Anyone looking for a new pet wants a pet that is clean, socialized and well trained. Most people don't know that these are all qualities of pet rats!

There are many misconceptions about rats. People think that rats are unclean and carry disease. In fact, rats are quite clean and groom themselves several times a day. These aren't sewer rats we're talking about. These pet rats, or fancy rats as they're called, have been domesticated and bred in captivity for at least 150 years. Pet rats are quite tame after living with humans for so many generations and you'll find that they are nothing like their stereotypes.

Rats are very intelligent animals. Some consider rats to have intelligence close or equal to that of dogs. Rats are capable of learning to come when their names are called. They can even be litter trained just as easily as training a cat.

If you have any experience with other rodents such as hamsters, mice or gerbils you may be afraid of biting. Although biting is common with other rodents, it is almost unheard of with domesticated rats. Unlike their rodent cousins, rats are generally docile creatures. Most of the time rats just like to lay around, especially males. Rats can easily be trained to be good lap or shoulder pets.

In the wild, rats live together in colonies and have a complex social structure. These social instincts carry over to pet rats. Pet rats tend to develop strong bonds with humans and with their cage mates. So much so that it is common for rats to become very depressed when a cage mate passes away.

There are many apartments that won't allow dogs or cats, and it may simply not be practical to have larger pets in some houses. In those situations a pet rat is the perfect solution. Cages for pet rats usually don't consume much room at all, usually just a two foot by two foot space, which makes pet rats great for small apartments.

Rats are friendly and intelligent animals and make great first pets for children. Being clean and easy to care for makes them great companions for the elderly. Go out and get your pet rat today!

Doi Khun Tan National Park - Thailand

General Information

Located in the mountain of the northern Thailand, Doi Khun Tan National Park is home to many interesting species both flora and fauna, as well as many historical spots of interest. Its most renowned feature is Thailand's longest railroad tunnel, which is 1,352 m. long. Doi Khun Tan National Park straddles the mountains separating Lamphun and Lampang Provinces, covering 255.29 sq.km and ranges in elevations from 325m to 1,373m at the summit. Established in 1975, it was the 10th National Park in Thailand.

Topography

Doi translates to mountain in Northern Thai, while Khun Tan refers to the numerous streams and watershed flowing down from the mountain.

Climate

The three basic seasons are summer, from March to June, rainy, from July to October, and winter, from November to February. The temperature varies from 38 degree celsius during the hot season, to as cold as 5 degree celsuis. Rainfall, which falls mostly during the rainy season, averages about 1,034 mm. per year.

Flora and Fauna

The forests of Doi Khun Tan have changed dramatically in the past century due to human disturbance. The forests can be divided into three types, with distinct elevational ranges.

Lowland elevations (325-850 meter). Originally a teak forest, the lowland elevation is composed of a degraded mixed bamboo deciduous forest as deciduous Dipterocarp- oak forest.

Middle elevations (850-1,000 meter). This is a transitional area where the lowland deciduous forest and upland evergreen- pine forest mix to from the mixed evergreen and deciduous forest. Here are only two species of pine trees in Thailand, a two -needle pine (Pinus merkusii) and three-needle pine (P. kersiya) both of which can be found here.

Upland Elevations (1,000-1,373 meter). The forest here is composed mostly of evergreen hardwood trees and a minority of pine (Pinus merkusii) to from an evergreen- pine forest . Much of the forest and watershed on the west side of the national park have been distrubed; however, pristine conditions are found on the east side

In addition, Doi Khun Tan offers year-round viewing of wild-flowers such as orchids, and gingers. Doi Khun Tan is botanically very diverse, home to over 1,300 different vascular species. Numerous edible and fungi fond in the park.

Some wildlife still exists in Doi Khun Tan, including the Siamese hare, porcupine, wild chicken, wild boar and weasel, as a variety of birds, reptiles, spiders and insects. The effects of hunting, logging, frequent fires and human encroachment have greatly reduced their numbers. In the past, gibbons, tiger, elephants, bears, wild cattle, serow, slow loris, barking deer and many other species were also residents of Doi Khun Tan, but they are all gone.

Treating Respiratory Infections In Rats

Unfortunately our ratty friends are rather prone to respiratory diseases and Mycoplasma Pulmonis (MP) is the most prevalent one.

Symptoms of MP

Laboured breathing, chattering, weight loss, sneezing, sniffling, squinting, rough hair, Porphyrin staining (red staining) around nose and eyes.

In more severe cases your rat may have pneumonia, infertility, miscarriage and death.

MP can also cause an inner ear infection, so watch out for head tilting in your rat.

Prevention of MP

Your rat will be more susceptible to MP if he is stressed. Try to keep his life as stress free as possible by keeping him stimulated (see toys and games page) and keeping his home clean.

Pollutants and exposure to ammonia and faecal material (pooh) will also make your rat more susceptible to MP. Keep you rat in a clean, uncrowded and well-ventilated cage with clean and safe bedding. Do not use shavings, as these will aggravate MP and may cause other diseases too.

If you get a new rat keep them in a separate cage, in a separate room from your other rats for two weeks. This is a quarantine period. As MP can spread to other rats easily.

What is Mycoplasma Pulmonis?

Are you ready for the science bit?

Mycoplasma is a PPLO (pleuropneumonia-like organism). It is different from other forms of bacteria, as it doesn't have a cell wall (this is important to remember when treating it). There are 95 types of Mycoplasma, but rats get the kind called Mycoplasma pulmonis (MP). Mycoplasma is the organism genus and pulmonis is the organism species.

MP is carried in the upper respiratory system. It causes a blistering effect on the surface of the lungs and can cause secondary infection. However genital mycoplasmosis is common in female rats and although they do not always have an infection they will have reduced fertility.

MP is very fragile outside of the host (your rat) and it is very susceptible to heat, detergents and disinfectants. This means that washing your hands with hot water will kill MP.

People can't catch MP, but we can carry it on our clothes and skin for short periods of time. Mycoplasmas live in respiratory passages and lungs, so if we sneeze we could transmit it to our rats. MP can infect an entire rat colony as they transmit it by sneezing, grooming and sexual contact.

Although MP is very delicate and has a slow rate of growth, once it takes root in a rats system it can be difficult to get rid of. MP mimics your rats antigens fooling your rat's system into ignoring the invading organism.

Rats can be more susceptible to other respiratory diseases once they have MP, as it compromises the integrity of the lung wall.

Treating MP

Not all antibiotics work on MP. This is because some antibiotics attack the invading organisms cell wall and remember MP does not have a cell wall, so these antibiotics will be useless.

You must use the correct antibiotics as soon as possible. Remember there are other pathogens that effect rats, so make sure it is MP before you begin treatment.

Good antibiotics to use are:

Doxycycline combined with Baytril. This should be given in an oral form using a syringe, or dropped in your rat's favourite liquid food (Ginger loves soy milk). Give your rat 2.5mg/pound (make sure you get an accurate weight of your rat using electronic scales). Give this twice a day for 14-30 days.

Aminophylline can be used if your rat has pneumonia to help it breathe more easily. Give 2.5-5mg/pound two times a day.

Prednisone can reduce inflammation, and can be used with other antibiotics. In the advanced stages of MP this will allow your rat to live more comfortably. Give 0.25-1mg/pound once a day. Only ever use this for a few days at a time, unless your rat is dying, in which case keep it up until he passes.

Make sure your rat is getting enough fluids. You may wish to use a syringe, or eyedropper to give water to your rat by hand. If your rat is not eating properly use a vitamin and calorie supplement, such as Nutrigel. This tastes nice, so your rat should take it easily.

Learning

Rats pick up new behaviors and tricks very quickly. They try hard to please their owners and you may be surprised how much your rat can learn. In the wild, rats, like humans are survivors and generalists. They have to cope with every eventuality that nature throws at them. They learn to raid human food and stores and avoid being caught.

Rats have been trained to press a button for food. If they are given food, every fourth time they press the button, they will quickly press it four times to get the food. They can also learn to turn a light on and off, with no reward. They will simply do it as they like the change. They also like to feel they have power over these things. Rats have amazing senses of smell and hearing and have been trained to sniff out land mines and bombs, in the place of dogs.

Mazes

Rats are also very good at mazes. It is actually quite fun to make up a maze for your ratty and put their favorite treat at the end. The first time it may take a while for them to get to the treat, but the next time you will see they are much faster.

In one incident a rat was placed in an eight arm maze, with a treat at the end of each arm. The rat learnt how to empty the maze, without going down the same arm twice. It didn't follow a set pattern, so it's route could not be predicted. Someone suggested that the rat was leaving a scent mark at each tunnel entrance it had been down, so that it would know not to go down that one again. However, further tests eliminated this possibility. They then turned the maze around and the rat became disoriented. It turned out that the rat had used visual markers to remember what arms of the maze it had already been down. Some arms were near a window, or a light. This showed that the rat could picture the maze and the location of the tunnels it had been down. It then reflected on this experience and could find food with minimum effort.

Social Intelligence

Rats are incredibly social creatures, who have very complex relationships with other rats. As you probably know, they can have a very strong bond with people too. In the wild and in horrible labs, rats can die from social stress. Their relationships are so important to them that there have been report of rats dying from heart break after their partner has died.

Shy rats have been proven to die younger than their more confident peers. It is important to be patient with him, if you have a shy ratty. If you are gentle and quiet and consistent in your efforts you may have a breakthrough.

Rat Dreams

Yes, rats do dream. Have you ever seen your little ratty twitching a little in his sleep? Or even squeaking? Well, it has been proven that rats dream, in very much the same way as humans. They dream about what they have done that day and you may see them moving as they dream.
